Who are the owners, and where did they come from?
The owners are husband and wife team Chris Stevens and Gail Mollner. Chris is the head guy in the kitchen, overseeing all aspects of that silly, surly crew, and cooking your weekend breakfast (his favorite meal of the day). Gail is the gal-of-all-trades in the front of the house, selecting intersting wines and delivering kick-ass cappuccinos.
They have worked in various Twin Cities restaurant kitchens, and met at the Table of Contents in St. Paul. They loved cooking together there and, like many cooks, always dreamed of owning their own place.
They took a few years off from restaurant work to get office jobs with health insurance/paid vacations/pensions/holiday pay and weekends off to be absolutely certain that the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence.
Although it is actually quite awesome on that side of the fence, they decided to trade it all for Blackbird. |
